Storing and Freezing Baked Goods
Personal Finance
As part of our freeze food and save money series we wanted to share with how to properly store your baked goods in the freezer, refrigerator and pantry. Knowing when to freeze or refrigerate can save you a substantial amount of money, especially if you have a large family or you’re an avid baker.
Here's How to Store Your Baked Goods
When you store your bought or home made baked goods in the freezer or pantry you need to be sure that they are wrapped tight or sealed in a container that’s air tight. However, dairy filled pies or cakes and fresh “bakery items” require special attention.
Storing Cakes and Pies with Dairy or Meat
A good rule to follow is if the baked item has the word “cream”, “butter” or “cheese” in it, you need to cover and refrigerate. The same goes for any savory items with meat in them like empanadas, piroshkis or parathas. If you’ve never tried making empanadas – these recipes are great.
Storing Breads from the Bakery
Pastry shop style breads and baguettes ought to be kept in their unique bundling (a sealed shut sack will turn coverings soaked) at room temperature; if solidifying, exchange to a resealable cooler pack.
